Happy Canada Day!! What better way to celebrate any holiday than with music. Canada Day is no exception and so I've compiled a list of the top 10 rock songs by Canadian Artists. Canada is lucky to have so many amazing and successful artists that we can be proud of! This list could have been massive but I chose rock songs to not only narrow the list down, but because rock songs are awesome! We deal with a number of rock and country cover bands, and they are always a hit at no matter what event they are playing at. You can't go wrong with a good rock songs, and this list by Canadian artists is no exception.
However, it's not only music that Canada has blessed the world with, our country has many achievements including the invention of the zipper, egg carton and Wonderbra, Canada patented peanut butter and even created the game of basketball. There are so many things Canada has done, but let's get back to the music!
So I clearly couldn't even stop at the top 10 songs because there are just too many out there! So I added a couple bonus tracks after I got to 10. Consider it to be my Happy Canada Day gift to you!

Finally summer has arrived, and with the frosts we have recently had this June it feels like summer was never going to get here. But officially, June 21st marks the first day of summer! I am so excited for this season for many reasons. My family and I have a whole bunch of camping trips booked which is a highlight for us, especially the kids. Beyond camping, there are so many things to do in Manitoba during summer, we will not be bored! Tinkertown, the Zoo and Pine Ridge Hollow's Farmers Market are just a few places we plan on visiting!
Summer is also the start of "wedding season", which I love because who doesn't love a wedding?! We love playing music at weddings and being a part of so many couples' special days! Summer is full of so many great things, so let's celebrate these things with a fun summer playlist!
I started off with a good mix of a variety of styles, especially country songs which are some of my favourites! But then I realized I got a little carried away on the country front and they started to dominate the list.. Oops! There are just so many amazing summer country songs out there and I really hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

The father-daughter dance is such a special moment at a wedding! I remember my dance with my dad clearly and how much it meant to me. My father has been (and continues to be) one of the most important men in my life. His support is like no other and I am so lucky to have him as my dad!
Picking the song I wanted to dance with my dad to was not easy, because there are so many amazing ones out there. I narrowed my choices down to a country song because we had a backyard country wedding, and in all honesty I love country music. And from there, I chose the song that stood out to me as the best representation of my relationship with my father. In the end, we danced to I Loved Her First by Heartland and the song is still so special to me!
Out of all the songs danced to at a wedding, the father-daughter dance brings me to tears each and every time. Especially now that I have a daughter and know that one day she will get to share in this special dance with my husband! Is anyone else out there this moved by the bride dancing with her father??
While choosing your father-daughter song, think about your dad and what he means to you! The list below should at least help you in the right direction. Each song is linked to YouTube so you can sample them all! Remember that this is your moment with your dad, to thank him for all that he's done for you, and to show your appreciation of him as the amazing man that he has been in your life. Choose the song that speaks to you and enjoy dancing with your dad on your wedding day!

When I got married, I left this song up to my then future husband to pick. Really, it was a song to represent him, so why not let him choose what song he wanted to walk down the aisle to? Not only was it one less item from my plate, but it was a great way to get him involved in at least one aspect of the wedding. I know most men "don't care", but I made him care. I made it become a task of his, I made it important, and honestly I probably threatened him if he didn't do it! lol! In the end, he chose Good Looking Boy by The Who. The Who is one of his favourite bands of all time, this song is mostly appropriately fitting for a wedding, and my hubby is a good looking boy! So I said sure, and this song became his on his wedding day.
When it comes time to choose which song you'd like your groom to walk down the aisle to, a few things to consider might be if the song is solely for the groom, or if the groomsmen and/or officiant might be walking down the aisle as well. I try to discourage the use of TOO MANY songs used during the precessional, and stick to using no more than 3; one for the groom/groomsmen/officiant, one for the bridesmaids/flower girl/ring bearer and one for the bride. Another thing to consider when choosing the right song, is a song that represents the groom, in any way really. It could be by a band he likes, the lyrics may be fitting, or it could just be a favourite song.
If you choose to go traditional, all the power to you! That probably makes song choices a lot easier! But if you are choosing something different than the norm, I do encourage you to try leave this one up to your groom! He may surprise you with something totally fitting! If you are still having trouble deciding, check out my list of songs below or listen to them in iTunes here! These are songs that clients have used, songs that we recommend, and songs that we have found are recommended by others through our research. Even though this is the first song to be played at a wedding, his song will probably be forgotten by most by the end of the night. It is also likely that the groom's song will be overshadowed by the bride's song, so don't stress too much on this song choice! Enjoy listening to the songs below, I hope they inspire you and help guide you through your song choices!

May Long Weekend marks the first long weekend of summer! June is just around the corner and warm days are ahead of us. Thankfully Queen Victoria's birthday is still recognized today, giving us a reason to have a day off in May! For my family and me, the long weekend is filled with birthday parties, getting the garden ready for planting, and a lot of time spent outside. I'm sure many of you are camping, spending time with family or just enjoying an extra day off from work!
Queen Victoria was born on May 24th 1819, and her birthday was recognized as a Canadian holiday in 1845. She passed away in 1901 after reigning for more than 63 years. Although the holiday used to only be observed on the 24th of May (or the 25th if the 24th fell on a Sunday), in 1952 it was decided the holiday would be observed the Monday on or before the 24th. Not that many of us mind a day off any day of the week, but it is definitely nice to have an extended weekend. And what long weekend isn't complete without music to go along with it!? I can't wait for you to hear what I've put together for you!
When deciding what list to make for you to enjoy, I had a few angles I could have run with. I decided to go with songs about queens because Victoria Day is all about Queen Victoria's birthday. I was torn between birthday songs or songs by Queen (though that would have been a long list, Queen has so many hits!) but I enjoyed the variety I was able to pull up with songs about queens. There are SO many songs out there about queens, and I didn't want to overwhelm the list with too many, so it was tough to narrow it down to only 15! But just because a song didn't make the list, it doesn't mean it is not great. Here are 15 of the top songs enjoyed by me that are about queen's. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
Happy Victoria Day!

I think the mother-son dance is a little underrated. As a mom of 2 sons, I certainly CAN wait until their wedding days (my babies are growing up too fast!) but to share a special dance with them on their wedding day will be a moment to cherish and one I do look forward to.
I am still a “newer” mom, and since becoming a mom, I have a whole new appreciation for my own mother and moms in general! Wow do we ever go through A LOT when we become mothers! Although the mother-son dance is a newer tradition at weddings, it is certainly deserved! So why isn’t the mother-son dance more of a highlight at a wedding?
The focus is being shifted from the bride (she is the prize and highlight of the wedding of course!), and where usually a lot of attention is paid to the parents of the bride (Yay! They’re giving their daughter away!), or even just the fathers (men... you feel me?), the mother of the groom can sometimes feel a little lost at the sidelines. But this is the time for the groom to focus solely on and appreciate his mom. And for everyone else to reflect on the huge role she has played in her sons life who has now become a husband!
Picking a song for the mother-son dance does not have to be too tricky. There are a few things that you might want to consider, but really, you just need to chose a song that you and your mom both like! It doesn't even have to be a song ABOUT mom's, but maybe a thank-you song, a song that you and your mom both enjoy listening to, or a song that has some good wisdom behind it that you can picture your mother sharing with you. Don't be afraid to ask your mom for some advice or input into the song, she may have the answer if you are struggling on your decision.
I've put together a list of some of the more popular mother-son dances to help inspire you at the least! Below you will find the list with a link to each of the songs in YouTube. No matter what song you choose, this special dance you get to share with your mom will certainly be one she will always remember.

I really enjoy being a part of the Manitoba Social groups on Facebook. I see some great questions people post and they get my wheels turning. So many things have changed since I had my wedding social an unmentionable amount of years ago. The rules are much "looser" now but I see a lot of struggles as well! Everyone wants to make sure they are following suit, not charging too much, have great prizes, and more. I see a lot of couples now buy most of their social prizes, as less and less business are donating to the cause. I remember asking all of my family (parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, siblings, etc) and even my wedding party to all donate something to the auction. We probably spent countless weekends soliciting businesses, handing out letters all over the city, and even asking friends with businesses (Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Scentsy, etc) to donate. In the end we had a great number of prizes and everything worked out well, as it will for you! Please click here for our Ultimate Social Checklist that covers everything you need for your social. We covered that in a previous blog that can be found here. But for now, lets get to those miscellaneous social items!
The first question I want to address is "What Should Be On My Social Ticket?" This one is simple enough. Make sure you have the following important information:
1- Your names! People want to know WHO they are supporting!
2- The date and time, for obvious reasons...
3- Venue location with address. It is important to put the address so there are no mix-ups or your guests heading to the wrong venue!
4- Ticket price. Even though the standard price for a social ticket is $10 (if you're charging more, there better be a good reason why; what makes it worth the extra $5?!), it is still good to put it on just.in.case.
5- Some optional items you could put on are: "Late Lunch", "Door Prizes", "Silent Auction", etc...
I also see a lot of people asking about a schedule for the night of their social. So I made it easy by putting one together for you here. You'll need people to work all your sales for the night, and this is generally done by the wedding party, family or even close friends. Make sure you send a copy to each person who is helping you, plus have a few copies at your social just incase someone is forgetful! You can always email me here if you would like me provide you a copy with different time slots if your social is going until 2!
I am going to continue update this post as I see more questions, as opposed to creating new posts to address every little thing. So make sure the check back often and see what will cover!
Do you have a question you are looking for an answer to? Shoot me a message here and I will help you find the answer!
Until we meet again,
Trying to figure out how much you'll need for various elements of your social can be a huge stressor - but it doesn't have to be! Unfortunately whoever you ask about how much juice or chips someone had at their social, each answer you get will be different, and the reason for this is that every single crowd is different. It is honestly impossible to guess the exact amount that will satisfy your crowd, but hopefully this guide will help you get close. Will you run out? The honest answer is, maybe! Will it matter? Not so much. It depends when you run out, what you run out of, and again, it depends on your crowd! If you run out of chips at 11, but are serving your late lunch at 1130, then it doesn't matter! My suggestion is to OVER BUY. It is of course better to have too much than not enough. Make sure you keep your receipts so you can return everything that is unused. So take a deep breath, follow these guidelines and every little thing will be all right!
In the end, what you have will be what you have. If you run out, there is nothing you can do about it, so don't sweat it! Running out of cranberry juice will not ruin your social, I promise you. I hope this guide takes a little bit of the stress off of you and that you have a fantastic social!
May fun characterize your evening,
Let's talk SOCIAL FOOD! Also known as a late lunch or midnight snack, but not always served at midnight, the food is another highlight of socials. You can NEVER go wrong with traditional luncheon meats, cheese, rye bread and pickles. After a few drinks, who doesn't love a good old fashioned sandwich?! But as with everything, times change, and so does the social food. Some couples choose to follow a cultural meal serve their guests, or some couples want to highlight a favourite food of theirs as their late lunch. Some couples choose a theme for their social and the food reflects that, or maybe simply they found a better price for one type of food over another. Whatever the reason behind the food choices, the reveal of the midnight snack is exciting all on its own. Personally, all my food restrictions go out the window on a social night so I can enjoy whatever comes my way!
Most couples choose to serve the food around 11 followed by the silent auction draw. Food comes out, lights come on, people win prizes. There is no rule of thumb to this, it is strictly preference. Socials generally start at 8pm, and a lot of people don't start showing up until a little later than that. However, 8-11 is still 3 hours of dance music, drinks and plenty of time to work up an appetite! Some socials even serve the midnight snack by 1030. One thing to keep in mind though, you also want to keep people at your social. When the lights go on and the prizes are all drawn, most people tend to leave. If you are making money off the bar, you might want people to stay a little longer. Or if you know a big crowd is coming later, hold things off so they can get their money well spent to support you. There are a lot of things to consider, but in the end, no one is going to care if food was served at 1030, 11 or 1130!
On with the list! Here are the top foods that are away from the traditional. I hope you find some inspiration and something that works for you!
The options are virtually endless when it comes to choosing what sort of late lunch to serve. Pick something that is in your budget and something that you love. When deciding how much food to serve, take the amount of people you are expecting and have enough food for about 2/3 or so of that amount. If you are expecting 350 people, you don't need food for 350 people, I'd go for 225-250 people. Not everyone will eat, people don't eat a lot, and you might not even hit the amount of people you are expecting. Most caterers will help you decide how much food to serve, but if you choose to DIY, then go with the above mentioned amounts! I'd love to hear about what you decided to serve at your social, even if it is the traditional! Let me know what you did in the comments below :)
Man I Love Food,
Nothing makes or breaks an event like the music. The Manitoba social has been an ongoing tradition for many years and finding the right DJ to play the right music is one element to fully consider. You need to make sure you end up with a great party where everyone is dancing and having a good time. Let's face it, if the music sucks, so will your social! I pride myself in the research I do for each individual event we play at. Talking with the couples or hosts of the event, market research, tried and true songs, they are all considered when putting my music lists together! I don't just cut and paste playlists for each social, I make sure the crowd is considered and I will aim to please them. I want your social to be a success, I want it to be talked about as the great party your guests attended, and of course I want our music to be talked about!
I remember my first social I went to when I was about 11 or 12 years old. I don't remember prizes, or decorations, or even the food, but I do remember the music and I remember dancing! A lot of the songs from this list I've composed for you today bring back memories fo that day. These are truly the classics and what a lot of people look forward to when attending a social. They are fun and they really get people dancing. I really hope these songs never go out of style and continue to be played at socials for as long as a social is still a Manitoba thing! Click here for the entire playlist of classic social songs. All songs also available below to listen to individually in YouTube! Whether you want all of these songs or just some of them played at your social, you really can't go wrong with any of them. I had a great time making this list, but also had a hard time not making it too long! There are so many good classics out there, but in the end my focus was on the most popular for socials! Happy listening, and keep your eyes open for my next social related blog that will actually have nothing to do with music! Exciting!
