St. Patrick's Day is this weekend! But do you know why on the 17th of March we wear green and celebrate with shamrocks, Irish beer and great music? It wasn’t always the party that we know it as today, but was a religious holiday that involved a feast celebrating Saint Patrick. The most interesting part? Saint Patrick wasn’t even Irish! He was a slave to pirates and when he was freed he began missionary work in Ireland, falling in love with the country and adopting it as his own. Saint Patrick died on March 17th 461, and he has been celebrated on his day of death ever since.
Present day St Patrick celebrations involve parades (the first St. Patrick's Day parade was in Boston in 1737!) and parties. It is celebrated all over the world becoming largely symbolic, and also highly used to promote tourism. You can expect to see green decorations of shamrocks, rainbows and pots of gold, leprechauns and Irish costumes almost everywhere you go in March.
What does it mean to us at All Around Sound? Another great excuse to celebrate with great music! We love music and how it can get you in the mood to put on your favourite green shirt and drink a Guinness beer at your local pub. We thought it was essential to share with you the history of this holiday that not many people know about, but we have also compiled a list of our top St. Patrick’s Day songs for you to help you celebrate! We hope you enjoy this list as much as we do. Whether you are having a St. Patrick's themed wedding social, going out with friends or just hanging out at home, these songs will bring out the Irish spirit in all of us!
